A Year-Long Celebration: Seton Legacy of Charity 1809-2009During the weekend of July 31, 2009, Sisters and Daughters of Charity came together in Emmitsburg, Md., to celebrate the bicentennial of our founding. All celebrations prior to the weekend led up to the July 31 celebration, for it was on that day 200 years ago
that Elizabeth Seton and her companions came together in St. Joseph’s Valley and began their religious life together . Sisters and Associates traveling to Emmitsburg had the opportunity to attend the liturgies; visit the sites of the Shrine; enjoy the “Music in the Life of Elizabeth Seton” concert (planned by S. Alice Ann O’Neill); and connect with others there to honor Elizabeth Seton’s legacy.
On Aug. 9, 2009, the Motherhouse chapel was host to a Friends and Former Members Liturgy. For the third time this year, the chapel was filled for a special liturgy celebrating our anniversary. Included amongst those attending were 28 out of 64 members from the “Band of 1964.” S. Pat Malarkey, a member of the Band, said one of the letters she received after the liturgy read, “We are remarkable and very successful women, who over the years have grown in deep wisdom and hospitality. Those days of formation really prepared us for our life journey and our ability to discern who we are and who we wanted to become.”
“I think this was a common feeling of everyone there,” S. Pat said.
