Calendar of Events
Our 200 th Anniversary celebration has provided a full schedule of varied events. Families, friends, partners in ministry, and former members have all been part of our festivities. We have reached out via our website, our publications, newspaper and magazine articles to tell our story of carrying on the charism of Charity and the legacy of St. Elizabeth Seton. Listed below is a calendar of events that have already occurred and those that are still to come.
Jan. 4
Liturgies and prayer gatherings for the feast of St. Elizabeth Seton marked the official opening of our Year of Celebration. Events at the motherhouse included the presentation of Elizabeth Seton Awards. Gatherings were also held in Albuquerque, Colorado Springs, Lansing, Bedford, Berkeley ( California), and Hawaii. On January 5 a feast day/anniversary prayer service was held at Seton High School in Cincinnati.

Seton Legacy series of presentations was held in Mother Margaret Hall.
Nov. - Mar.
Sundays of Reflection at the motherhouse focused on the spirituality of St. Elizabeth Seton. A CD of all five presentations is available.
Jan. - Dec.
2009 issues of Intercom include articles, news coverage, and poetry related to St. Elizabeth Seton and the 200 th Anniversary. Update carries news of the anniversary in addition to a Seton Legacy of Charity column highlighting anniversary events. The Sister of Charity Website features a special 200 th Anniversary section. A 200th Anniversary Fact Sheet is being widely distributed at SC events and to schools and parishes. Anniversary bookmarks and window decals are available as handouts. Vinyl banners with our Anniversary logo are displayed on the motherhouse, Bayley Village, and College of Mount St. Joseph campuses.
Jan. - Dec.
McCann Room display features highlights of the 200-year history, and a Sisters of Charity Timeline is displayed in the Motherhouse. Twelve scrolls (approximately 7' x 3') listing the names of all deceased and current Sisters and Associates in Mission are on display at the motherhouse.
Jan. 26-30
A DVD with special activities for students and related 200th Anniversary materials were sent to Sister of Charity related schools for the celebration of Catholic Schools Week. A Sister of Charity display was also featured at the Cincinnati Archdiocesan Offices from late January till late February. Some of this material can be found on our web site.
Mar. 14
Nearly 500 people attended a special liturgy with families of Sisters and Associates at the motherhouse.
Mar. 14
St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Cincinnati, Ohio, was dedicated to Elizabeth Seton and the Sisters of Charity. Nearly 200 people participated in our delegation. Most wore green derby hats sporting bands with: "Sisters O'Charity." We had a float, busses for Sisters from the motherhouse and Mother Margaret Hall and for residents of Bayley Place and St. Joseph Home. Elder High School Band and the Elder-Seton Singers joined us as well as delegations from Holy Family School, Resurrection School, St. William School, and St. Bernadette School in Amelia. Both Seton High School and the College of Mount St. Joseph ran feature articles in their magazines highlighting the Sisters of Charity 200th Anniversary.
April 9-11
The Triduum Retreat entitled "The Paschal Mystery in Elizabeth Seton's Life and Spirituality" was led by Sr. Judith Metz at the motherhouse.
April 16
Sister of Charity Justina Segale and the Santa Maria Institute: Italian Immigrants in Cincinnati was presented by Dr. Christine Anderson, Xavier University, in the Seminar on the City at the Cincinnati Museum Center.
Apr. 22
College of Mount St. Joseph celebration of the 30th anniversary of the Master of Arts in Education honored the Sisters of Charity for their educational legacy.
Apr. 26
Dulcimer concert at Motherhouse chapel featured Sr. Sophia Gilmeyer’s antique dulcimer. Photos can be found on our web site.
May 3
Nearly 400 attended a special liturgy at the motherhouse with our Partners in Ministry. St. Brigid School choir, Xenia, added their voices to those of our Sister of Charity music ministry.
May 16 -
Aug. 30The national exhibit, Women and Spirit: Catholic Sisters in America opened at the Cincinnati Museum Center . It features a special section on local congregations of women religious. There has been press coverage in local and national newspapers as well as on local radio.
May 23
(May 23) Bicentennial Legacy of Charity medals were awarded to Cincinnati representatives Tim Moller, Mary Jo Mersmann, and Sr. Judith Metz. at St. Joseph's, Emmitsburg
June 10
Keynote lecture "Soar on Eagles Wings: Elizabeth Seton's Spirituality of Trust" given by Sr. Judith Metz at the College of Mount St. Joseph Spirituality Institute.
June 27
Anniversary banquet and concert , "Music in the Life of Elizabeth Seton," researched and directed by Sr. Alice Ann O'Neill, concludes the Sisters of Charity Gathering/Retreat.
June/July
Anniversary articles appear in The Catholic Telegraph ( Cincinnati), People of God ( New Mexico), The Cincinnati Enquirer, Cincinnati Magazine, Vincentian Heritage, and St. Anthony Messenger.
July 31 -
Aug. 2Commemorative events on the specific anniversary of the founding of the Sisters of Charity are being held at St. Joseph's in Emmitsburg.

Oct. 14 Elizabeth Seton Award and lecture presented by the College of Mount St. Joseph Religious Studies Department to a woman theologian will be presented to Sr. Regina Bechtle, S.C. (NY), co-editor of Elizabeth Bayley Seton: Collected Writings. Oct. 14 Employee Appreciation Dinner for all motherhouse and Mother Margaret Hall employees Oct. 15 Congregational Board for Sponsored Ministries Prayer Breakfast for board members and administrators of Sisters of Charity sponsored ministries.

Oct. 25
Closing 200th Anniversary liturgy celebrated by Archbishop Daniel Pilarczyk at the Cathedral of St. Peter in Chains followed by a reception. It will include a commemoration of the 180th Anniversary of the arrival of the Sisters of Charity in Cincinnati on Oct. 27, 1829.
