Student Attains Eagle Scout with Motherhouse Project

The Clifford Bird Observatory at the Mount St. Joseph Motherhouse has been attracting tremendous attention the past few weeks thanks to the work of Elder High School junior Sam Bono and his grandfather, Jim Bono. To attain his Eagle Scout, the highest rank in the Boy Scout program, Sam completed landscaping of the Mount St. Joseph Motherhouse bird sanctuary to match the existing landscape that has already been renovated.

The pair, with the help of a number of family and friends, constructed the water feature as the centerpiece of the area. The project consisted of several stages, which included: designing and formulating a plan and budget; recruiting volunteers and gathering materials required; implementing the water feature and planting suitable perennial plants and miscellaneous ground covering.

“The feature provides the opportunity to sit and reflect on the wonders of creation that surround us, and the soothing sounds of the water help us with that reflection,” said S. Marty Dermody, who was the SC liaison for the project. “It has been a pleasure working with Sam and Jim to make this dream a reality.”

A dedication will be planned for a later date. More information will follow.
