Following are summaries, highlights, quotes and photos from Thursday, July 13, of the Gathering.

Greetings from hot and humid Cincinnati where over 500 of the Charity Family are attending the Gathering 2006. The opening ritual was an invitation to the “company of charity” to “meet our grace”. In the words of Elizabeth Seton Sister of Charity President, Barbara Hagedorn, set the stage, urging us to enkindle the Spirit, to be open to the big vision today. Carmelita Murphy, O.P., the facilitator for the Gathering, explained how the rhythm of our days together will move us from input to reflection to a new understanding of vision, mission and charism for 2006-2007. The melodic strains of “Grace Approaches Gently” (composed by Marge Kloos and Terry Thorman) accompanied the proclamation of our identity as SC’s made by the members of the Leadership Council. Fifteen individual sisters who reside in the Motherhouse amplified the statements with an expression of her belief spoken in her native language (English, Spanish, or Chinese). Finally the colored ribbons signifying the focus areas were unfurled from the podium, and each person present was “clothed” with a matching rainbow of ribbons. Fresh from the exhilaration of the opening ceremonies, Associates, former members and Sisters greeted old friends and met new ones at the Social. Good food, good company and high spirits were seen-and heard-everywhere. As we gather to discern how best to express the gospel today – the genuine love and affection seen in these interactions, seemed a fitting beginning.

Quotes: “The social was a wonderful carry-over from the inspired opening ritual – joy, happiness, renewing acquaintances, appreciation – we have met our Grace.” (Mary Kathryn McFerrin)

“The Spirit came through loud and clear!” (Mary Dolores Schneider & Benedicta Mahoney)
