Heading Back
By S. Mary Bodde

After 20 years stateside, S. Mary Gallagher never imagined she would return to the Caribbean, her first love. On Jan. 19 she will fly to Miami, Fla., and take a plane to San Juan, Puerto Rico, where she will stay overnight. The following day Sister will catch the only flight to Dominica, a Caribbean island south of St. Lucia (where S. Mary ministered from 1979 until 1990). She will live in Roseau, the capitol, with the Daughters of Jesus, an international French congregation in education.

S. Mary will be working with the teachers in the Catholic school “to give them a better understanding of the Faith and being Christian so they can pass it on to the children they are teaching,” she said.

S. Mary Gallagher (right) arrives in the Caribbean island of Dominica this week to begin ministering in the Catholic school in Roseau, the capitol. This will be the second time Sister has served in the Caribbean; from 1979 until 1990 she ministered in religious education and faith formation in St. Lucia.

Bishop Gabriel Malzaire, the bishop of Dominica, is a native of St. Lucia and has been looking for more religious, both men and women, S. Mary explained. He wanted the Charities to come back to the Caribbean. S. Mary visited the island last July and stayed with the Daughters of Jesus while interviewing with Bishop Gabriel.

“I was very happy that all fell in place – and so appreciative of the love, care and support I felt,” she said of the ‘send-off ceremony’ held on Jan. 8 in the Motherhouse chapel. S. Mary received her missionary cross from S. Nancy Bramlage, councilor, and the Congregation blessed her.

“I want to thank everyone for their prayers, best wishes, gifts and cards,” she said.
