The Joy of Learning
By Leslie Bolger

A number of Sisters and Associates will see the fall session of the College of Mount St. Joseph LifeLearn program come to a close this week.

The LifeLearn program began at the College in the fall of 1994 and is still going strong. The program, which was created for adults ages 50 and older, enables participants to take classes for the joy of learning, not college credit.

There is an average of 175 students enrolled per semester. S. Florence Cremering is one of those students. This fall she took the course Covenant and Messiah: Two Important Keys to Understanding the Writing of Sacred Scripture.

“It is a chance to appreciate the teaching gifts of some of our Sisters and to meet new people,” S. Florence said.

The Sisters of Charity have always had a great involvement with the LifeLearn program. Some, like S. Florence, attend as students to enrich their knowledge on a particular subject, others teach as part of the program.

“Having the Sisters makes our program richer,” Mary Brickweg, office manager of LifeLearn, said.

S. Mary Bookser began teaching a LifeLearn course two years ago. This fall she taught Dreams: God’s Call to Wholeness. “I enjoy these evenings because they are less formal than college teaching, there are no papers to correct, and everyone there has chosen to be there,” S. Mary said.

“My Spanish class showed me that learning enriches our lives and can continue our entire life,” said S. Jean Miller, who taught Speaking Spanish Can Be Fun. “As our bodies slow down our world broadens through books, classes and conversation with others.”

There will be a new session of LifeLearn offered during the spring of 2010. For more information on the program, contact the LifeLearn office at (513) 244-4525.
