Sample Letter to Your Senator

The Most Honorable
United States Senate

The Most Honorable
House of Representatives
(Address)

Dear Most Honorable __________________________:

I am deeply concerned about the issue of Immigration Reform and believe it is vital that Congress take action with a comprehensive immigration bill. We believe it is important that legislation include the following components endorsed by the U.S. Catholic bishops:

  • An earned legalization program for the undocumented population, including a path to citizenship that is fair and achievable;
  • A future worker program that permits migrant workers to enter safely and legally and that includes worker protection and the option for participants to pursue a path of citizenship;
  • Family-based immigration reform that reduces backlogs and waiting times for family reunification;
  • Restoration of due process protection for immigrants taken away by the 1996 Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act (IIRIRA)
  • Policies that address the root causes of migration, including economic development in sending countries.

Congress needs to set aside party politics. You have been elected to serve the welfare and common good of ALL people and we hold you accountable to do that. In light of this I would appreciate a response from you with your stated position on this critical issue.

Sincerely,

Your Name, Address and Phone Number
