Continuing to Serve: S. Dorothy William Englert

Sister of Charity Dorothy William Englert enjoys coaching the All Saints School Bible Bowl team each year.

“I enjoy sharing my gifts, and helping others recognize their own gifts,” says Sister of Charity of Cincinnati Dorothy William Englert on her favorite aspect of volunteering.

S. Dorothy William retired from active ministry in 2007 and presently keeps busy with many volunteer ministries. One opportunity she particularly feels blessed to be a part of is bringing the Eucharist to Sisters in the Motherhouse, and to patients of Cincinnati Good Samaritan Hospital and residents in low-income nursing homes. She enjoys talking to the people she meets in these visits. Although, she does say it is difficult to see and interact with the poor people in the nursing homes that don’t receive the quality of care that the Sisters in Mother Margaret Hall nursing facility (Mount St. Joseph, Ohio) and those in Bayley (Cincinnati) receive, she is always happy to be able to do it. This is because they are very appreciative of her service and company.

In addition, S. Dorothy William volunteers in many educational settings. A former high school math teacher, Sister taught a little bit of everything over the years, including physical education, science, as well as coaching basketball. She also served as a high school and grade school principal, and in her last 10 years of active ministry, was the librarian at All Saints School in Kenwood (Cincinnati), which was her dream job as a child.

Because Sisters of Charity founder, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton’s, first mission was education, S. Dorothy William believes that is how she lives out the Sisters of Charity mission and especially stays connected to Elizabeth.
S. Dorothy William remains involved with All Saints School as coach of the Bible Bowl team, a team of students who study the Bible and each year participate in a competition among many Catholic grade schools in the area. Sister enjoys coaching them immensely. She also tutors children in the Lower and East Price Hill neighborhoods in Cincinnati. She says, “Anything you do to serve other people helps with your relationship with God.” Sister feels her faith is strengthened through volunteering.
