Meet Our New Associate: Patsy Schwaiger

By AJ Keith, Communications intern

Patsy Schwaiger

Patsy Schwaiger, the director of the Wellness Center at Mount St. Joseph University, made her commitment as an Associate to the Sisters of Charity on Aug. 11, 2019.

The director of the Wellness Center at Mount St. Joseph University, Patsy Schwaiger is just as concerned about spiritual wellness as she is physical wellness. Because of this, the decision to become an Associate in Mission to the Sisters of Charity came naturally and without hesitation. Patsy made her commitment as an Associate on Aug. 11, 2019, which she refers to as “coming home” because of her many years of experience that she has had with the Congregation.

At age 6, Patsy had the intention of becoming a Sister of Charity due her experience with them as her educators. Though life led her in a different direction, she felt compelled to return to her roots as a faith-filled woman. After accepting the position of wellness director at Mount St. Joseph University, Patsy rekindled her closeness with the Sisters of Charity. The chance to become an Associate for her arose six years ago and after a year of discernment, Patsy made her commitment to become an Associate this August. “I’m excited to become an Associate because I can do what I’m doing with even more integrity,” Patsy says.

The process of discernment for Association capitalized on what she already knew of the Sisters: they always nurture loving relationships. Patsy admired the personal approach to learning about Association and appreciated her Sister companion, S. Betty Finn, and her direction. Her warmth inspired her to discover new ways to serve others and to realize that her work is informed by the Gospel. Not only did she have a strong relationship with her companion, but she rekindled old friendships with the Sisters of Charity during this reflective year. Grateful for her rich experiences, Patsy says, “I’m excited to witness a new way to live the Gospel values through the lens of the Sisters of Charity’s mission.”

Because she is the director of the Wellness Center at Mount St. Joseph University, Patsy’s life mission is to ensure that all people reach mental and physical health. Viewing this position as a vocation rather than a career, Patsy has an active role in the lives of her students and those in need around her. Patsy is always looking for opportunities to serve outside of her work in various food pantries through Mount St. Joseph University’s various service programs. “The Sisters of Charity’s mission statement calls for us to act justly,” Patsy says. “That’s so similar to the Mount’s mission that it’s almost like a seamless garment into Association.”

According to Patsy, the “seamless garment” into Association is comprised of a fabric of the whole which reminds others that we all are a part of the same human race. Patsy is thrilled to have the chance to serve in the name of the Sisters of Charity and weave the values of simplicity and humility into the fabric of society. “My relationship with the Sisters of Charity has been cultivated for years,” Patsy says. “I’m looking forward to cultivating my faith as an Associate.”
