Your mere presence will
touch hearts.”

Nelson Mandela International Day

“The world remains beset by so much human suffering, poverty and deprivation. It is in your hands … to make of our world … a better
one for all.” – Nelson Mandela, 2008

July 18 is Nelson Mandela International Day in recognition of the former South African president’s contribution to a culture of peace and freedom. It is a global call to action for citizens of the world to help change the world for the better and in so doing, to build a global movement for good.

By giving a little of your time to make a change that is close to your heart or by giving a little of your time to make a difference for someone else, you can change the world around you.

Below are a few examples of how we might reach out to others in our communities:

  • Donate books to your local library.
  • Give blood.
  • Volunteer at a local hospice, as staff members often need as much support as the patients.
  • Volunteer at an animal shelter.
  • Write a letter to a newspaper editor about an issue that concerns you.
  • Become an organ donor.
  • Pick up trash at a park or a playground.
  • Buy a season pass to a local municipal pool and give it to a struggling family.
  • sk — sincerely — what you can do to help.
