Running for Justice

By Katelyn Rieder, Communications co-op

Five Sisters of Charity Community members will be participating in the iconic 2024 Flying Pig Marathon this weekend, May 3-5, 2024: Sisters Annie Klapheke, Sally Duffy, and Joyce Richter; Associate Karen Martin; and Justice Promoter Mackenzie Doyle. The group will be running or walking with the Ignite Peace (formerly IJPC) team to help raise funds for the organization. Continue reading to hear their stories.

Q: Is this your first time taking part in the Flying Pig? If not, how long/how many times have you done so?
This will be my seventh time participating in the Flying Pig as a member of the Ignite Peace team. I have participated in various events over the years, including the relay, the 10k and the half marathon.

Q: What type of race(s) will you be participating in?
This year I will be running the half marathon.

Q: Why are you participating? Who or what has motivated you?
Our world needs more peace and justice! I am running to support the programs of Ignite Peace. I am motivated by all those throughout history who have stayed in the long struggle for peace and justice, and who were undeterred by challenges or setbacks.

Q: Why should people consider supporting Ignite Peace?
Ignite Peace does great work in our community and state, advocating for abolition of the death penalty, supporting immigrants, educating about human trafficking and promoting nonviolence.

Justice Promoter Mackenzie Doyle will participate in the Flying Pig Marathon for the first time this Sunday, May 5.

Q: Is this your first time taking part in the Flying Pig? If not, how long/how many times have you done so?
Yes, it is my first time running.

Q: What type of race(s) will you be participating in?
Half marathon.

Q: Why are you participating? Who or what has motivated you?
Since I’m living in Delhi, I have no ability to avoid hilly runs, so I figured this would be the year to do the race since I had so much practice and I know that the Flying Pig is a hilly course! And when I found out that Ignite Peace has a team, I figured raising some money for a good cause would be an added benefit of running.

Q: Why should people consider supporting Ignite Peace?
Ignite Peace is an organization that is doing some great work in our local community trying to build an anti-racist and nonviolent society and I think if we want to further that vision of the world and make it a reality, we should donate to Ignite Peace!

S. Sally Duffy ran the virtual Flying Pig Marathon during the pandemic several years ago.

Q: Is this your first time taking part in the Flying Pig? If not, how long/how many times have you done so?
No. I have probably participated around 10 times or more.

Q: What type of race(s) will you be participating in?
Half marathon.

Q: Why are you participating? Who or what has motivated you?
To support Ignite Peace’s mission and programs by raising dollars to support their operations.

Q: Why should people consider supporting Ignite Peace?
If you are committed to ending the death penalty, supporting immigrants especially through comprehensive immigration reform, making our criminal legal system into a criminal justice and restorative justice system and learning more about our complexity in racist policies and systems, then please support Ignite Peace! I participate in many of Ignite Peace’s programs and am deeply grateful to their staff and servant leadership.

Associate Karen Martin (left) and S. Joyce Richter also participated together in the 2021 Flying Pig Marathon.

Q: Is this your first time taking part in the Flying Pig? If not, how long/how many times have you done so?
This is my 10th year. I am a walker, so I am much slower and far behind the runners! My first Flying Pig event was a 10K with Team IJPC (now Ignite Peace) in 2015. Since then I have participated every year (virtual during COVID). I have participated in the 5k twice, 10k twice, half marathon nine times, Three-Way Challenge once.

Q: What type of race(s) will you be participating in?
This year I will do the Three-Way Challenge (5k, 10k, half marathon) for the second time. The 5k and 10k is on Saturday and the half marathon is on Sunday. This is my second time doing this event.

Q: Why are you participating? Who or what has motivated you?
I participate for fun. The Flying Pig Marathon weekend is a notable event locally, nationally, and even internationally. Participants include elite runners, PR hopefuls, joggers, walkers, those with compromised abilities and even canines. There is incredible energy among the participants, supporters, spectators, volunteers, and sponsors. All convene for competition and to support a fantastic event with a mission to support many charities.

I also participate for wellness. The Pig weekend (and other events) motivate me to consistently walk and increase miles. Participation helps me work toward a goal while stimulating mental, spiritual and physical health.

Q: Why should people consider supporting Ignite Peace?
We all want to live in peace and justice. I believe the mission of Ignite Peace is the most commendable reason to donate. They “educate and advocate for peace, challenge unjust systems, and promote the creation of a nonviolent society.” They educate and advocate for nonviolence, racial equity, solidarity, intersectionality, and radical compassion. Donations to Ignite Peace are an investment for a “just and peaceful world.”

Q: Is this your first time taking part in the Flying Pig? If not, how long/how many times have you done so?
I have been participating in the Flying Pig since 2012. I have always walked the half marathon.

Q: What type of race(s) will you be participating in?
This year I’m doing the 10k (walk) because I didn’t have the time to prepare the way I would need to for the half marathon.

Q: Why are you participating? Who or what has motivated you?
It’s one of the ways I can help Ignite Peace. It’s such a wonderful organization and I believe in its mission. I also enjoy the challenge in preparing for the race. It’s being part of something much bigger than myself. It’s a great way to keep fit, and I love being outdoors.

Q: Why should people consider supporting Ignite Peace?
It’s an organization that’s devoted to justice and peace, particularly in our city. Supporting helps me contribute to something much bigger than myself.

So far, the team has raised more than $12,000 for Ignite Peace and its mission. To learn more about Ignite Peace, check out their website here. Happy running!
